Cat Diabetes Symptoms

feline diabetes

There are many signs that would indicate that your cat has diabetes, or at least the early stages of a potentially harmful disease.

One of the first things to do is to examine your cat’s litter box. If you see extra clumps of litter in his box it could indicate that your cat has something wrong. It is one of the first symptoms that most pet owners notice in their diabetic cat.

Check to see if your cat is experiencing extreme weight loss.

  • Does your cat go to the water bowl more often?
  • Does your cat eat constantly and never gain weight?
  • Does your cat have weakness in his hind legs or just weakness and lethargy?
  • Does your cat have a decrease appetite?

Feline Diabetes is a disease that affects about 1 in 400 cats. Diabetes mellitus happens because of the lack of production of insulin in the pancreas and the lack of response of the body’s cells to insulin. Without the insulin and cells acting perfectly together, the body won’t be able to utilize glucose and will result in elevated blood sugar levels called Hyperglycemia. When there is excess glucose it is processed and eliminated by the kidneys where the diabetic cat will have way more trips to the litter box. It will also mean that the cat’s body will need to compensate for this increased urination by having to drink huge amounts of water. (Make sure to have fresh water on hand everyday)
