Some people may think that testing their cats glucose level is a hard thing to do, but you will find out that it is not that bad and you might even find that your cat isvery calm when you do it.
First the things that you will need:
Glucometer
Test strips
Lancets; a lancet pen that came with your Glucometer.
Warm washcloth or a rice-filled sock: heat in microwave for 10 seconds
Tissue or cotton ball to apply pressure to the puncture site after the test
Small flashlight
Tablet and Pen - to log the levels
-There are many ways to approach testing your cat's blood glucose level. One idea is to use the element of distraction by putting a plate with a couple chunks of chicken in front of him.
-Before you begin, make sure that you consult with your Veternarian, and read the guide that came with your glucometer.
-Before you begin wash your hands.
-You will begin by petting your cat and making him comfortable. Your focus will be on your cats ear. Do not clean your cats ear with alcohol because it may start to burn his ear. You want to reduce as much stress as you can in your cat. The less stress, the lower the glucose levels.
-Use the warm cloth or sock full of rice to warm your cat's ear or even his paw pad before pricking it. This will increase the blood flow which will enlarge the capillaries.
-Position yourself so that you and your cat are both comfortable.
-Take the small flash light and place it behind your cats ear, becareful not to shine it in his eyes, locate a vein near the edge of the ear. It should look like a red string.
_Put the lancet at the vein and prick it.
_When you see the blood drop, touch the tip of the test strip to it.
-Place the test strip into the meter and wait as it counts down.
-Take the note pad and pen and record the time and date and the glucose reading.
-Remember if there is still blood present to use a tissue and apply pressure until it stops.
If there is any questions make sure to consult with your Vet.
